Honda Transalp Tours
  FAQ

Why do I have to use your recommended flight?
The trips have taken advantage of the boom in budget airline travel. Our preferred option is to use the regular  flights provided by Easyjet from regional airports around the country. This means we can arrange the convenient transfer to our hotel in Ronda, about  an hour and a half away. The cost for this is included in the trip price. However if you want to arrange your own flights and transfer to Ronda then that's fine and you can join the group at the hotel on the first day.

What about motorcycle clothing and hand luggage?
Easyjet allow 20kg of hold luggage and any reasonable weight that you can carry within their hand luggage size regulations. In addition you are allowed to carry your helmet. If you want to try and avoid the hold luggage charge you could consider wearing your bike jacket and perhaps wearing your boots and trousers!

What can I expect the weather to be like?
This information is provided by the BBC weather website, but please note that altitude affects the average air temperature by 2 degrees Celsius per thousand feet. Some of the riding will be up to 4000 feet and Ronda itself, where we spend 2 nights on a 3-night trip, is around 3000 ft. Gibraltar’s average climate figures are measured near to sea level. London’s figures are moderated by its urban environment and are probably a little higher than most parts of the UK.

What clothing should I bring?
You can see from the climate statistics that the low altitude temperatures for December, January, February and March are usually typical of May weather in the UK. October, November and April can feel more like our high summer conditions. However you need to allow for rain. Even so there are less rainy days during the winter in southern Spain than the average English summer. A really telling statistic is a comparison of the average number of hours of sunshine. November, December, January and February in Spain having as many hours of sunshine as July and August in the UK. The altitude will have a marked affect so you must also be prepared for the possibility of quite cold conditions during some of the rides. We recommend waterproof, breathable textile clothing for these conditions, as it tends to be more comfortable. Leather clothing is also much heavier than textiles, which needs to be considered if you want to avoid any excess baggage charges. However leather still has the advantage of greater abrasion resistance and is fine if you carry a waterproof oversuit. It is wise to be prepared for quite large temperature fluctuations on an average days ride. Whatever you wear you must have a warm and dry option.

What are the bikes like?
Honda 700 Transalp are ideal for the conditions in Spain. They are light and fun for the bendy back roads but are capable of cruising at motorway speeds even with a pillion. The riding position is comfortable and upright with a low screen that makes high speed riding sustainable. They have long travel suspension that smoothes the bumps when the road surface deteriorates. The engine produces usable power at low revs, which makes it a pleasure to use in difficult, technical riding. The only issue of concern is the standard seat height of 841mm. However there is a low seat option for those that request it, which reduces the height by about 25mm. We also have limited availability of a Transalp with lowered suspension which reduces the seat height by a further 30mm, making the bike lower than a 2009 CB600 Hornet.

What are the insurance requirements?
For automatic insurance acceptance the following licence requirements are needed.Riders must be over 30 years of age
Riders must have held a full licence and been riding continuously for the last 2 years
Have a maximum of 2 endorsable driving offences in the last 3 years
No CD (careless driving) conviction
No DD (reckless or dangerous driving) conviction
No DR (drink or drugs) offence
No UT (theft or unauthorized taking) offence
No MS50 (motor racing on the highway) offenceAny driving history outside of these conditions must be referred for insurance acceptance.

What money will I need?
Breakfast and the first evening meal is included. However you will need money for fuel and all other meals and extras. About 50 Euros a day per person seems typical. There are a huge range of restaurants to chose from and you can eat well very cheaply or go to a Michelin starred establishment where you will pay rather more! Most groups want to stay together and find a good compromise. We find the simplest and most efficient method of paying for fuel, coffee stops etc. is with a kitty system, whereby each member of the party puts some cash in, which one person holds, and that person pays for everybody in one payment. If you’re not fluent in Spanish, it’s just more convenient. All major credit cards are accepted in Spain, and there are a variety of cash machines available in Ronda.

What documentation will I need?
Driving licence and passport should be carried with you at all times. You must also have available the new European health information card and your travel insurance information.

Road insurance and registration documents are under the seat of the bike
